'Grey' is the preferred spelling for the color. 'Gray' is the name of a person or place. In some old texts, in old days printers used a printing press with individual type to print a page. If they lost a letter or did not have enough letters, they substituted the closest letter they had which may be a misspelling, but the pronunciation of the word was correct. This is why in old manuscripts you may see 'f' replacing 's', etc.
