A very good book. Of course its a satire of sorts on Soviet Russia.
The old pig in the beginning represents Lenin
All pigs represent members of the upper echelon of the Communist Party with Snowball as Trotsky and Napoleon as Stalin.
Boxer..the horse represents the working class while the dogs are a representation of the NKVD or what was later the KGB.

The by lines written by the pigs/party are:
"All animals are equal" with the added line later "but some are more equal than others" and "Four legs are good" with the added line "but two legs are better".

It helps to have a basic knowledge of Soviet Russia and the Bolsheviks prior to reading it.

It was a pretty good story, as well as a good parable about how dictators can corrupt people's ideals, take over, and make life sweet for themselves while the people they rule over live in misery. Also, it was an easier read than 1984.
