Sacajawea was 6 months pregnant when she joined the Lewis & Clark expedition.

The coin shows here carrying her son, Jean Baptiste.

The back of the coin shows an eagle and 17 stars. The stars represent the 17 states of the Union as of 1804 at the start of the expedition.

The designer was Glenna Goodacre, who is also designed the Vietnam Women’s Memorial in Washington, DC. See: http://dc.about.com/od/monumentphotos/ss/VietnamMemPts_4.htm

Bobaloo has it right, there way 767,140,000 minted at the Philadelphia mint and 518,916,000 minted at the Denver mint. There was also 4,047,993 Proofs made at San Francisco (S) just for that year and they have been struck every year since. 5,000 of this date was given to Goodacre in a special finish for payment for her design, another 5,500 had boldly detailed tail feathers, not sure what happened to them. I get the idea they were a prototype that got out of the mint.
