solar activity such as sun spots and flares have a disturbing effect on radio transmission here on earth. in addition there is wide fluctuations in the Aurora Borealis or northern lights.

Activity on the sun varies. During quiet periods, the sun is just bright, and warms the Earth. But, there are violent events - Coronal Mass Ejections, Solar flares, prominences, that do affect us. CME's are probably the most "dangerous." These are huge explosions on the sun that send out billions of tons of charged particles in a particular direction. Sometimes, Earth just happens to be in the place the CME is projected to - and we lose satellites, power grids, the northern & southern lights are bright & can be seen down to the Equator, and communications are disruptive. Solar flares, kinda the same thing, send out a similar blast of radiation, but it's mostly the effect of the radiation we feel. Canada lost a good portion of its power grid in the 1980's because of one of these.

Prominences are mostly just pretty; they don't affect us very much at all.

Yes Solar Flares send out massive amounts of Electromagnetic energy, This energy can knock out satellites and disrupt communications.

Hope this helps
