I'm in the same situation as others - trying to cancel my DirecTV service however I don't see why I should have to pay the fee. When I got the service I was told that there are cancellation loopholes - residences where dishes are not allowed and etc. My concern comes from holding up the truth. I inquired about the cancellation procedure - receiver return and such. To my surprise I was being quoted the fee babble. After heated debate the rep. stated that a dish can be put anywhere, including condo buildings and started quoting FCC regulations at me. I was told that the dish could be on the tripod on the roof, on a balcony, or attached to the wall outside. The Aha - I'm moving to a 30 floor condo building (I'm no where need the top), no balconies, & roof pool (that is the top level). I checked FCC & according to what they say I shouldn't have to pay, but DTV thinks I should pay. What is the best way to tackle the issue?

If you signed a contact and then by your own actions (moving) need to cancel the contract before it expires you are obligated to pay the fee.

Nope, they will not. I know how they work, they'll talk you into some lame gift cards and coupons but it will come nothing close to paying your whole fee... Your best bet would honestly be to talk to DTV and threaten them with cancelation, you bet your butt your gonna get some pretty sweet deals...

I got out of my Direct TV contract by complaining snow was building up on the dish and interfering with the signal. Which it was. Asked to speak with a supervisor. They let me out of my contract with no problem and even offered me a bunch of incentives to stay. I did not take them went back to cable. Just call and try to get someone else.

Call your credit card company and have them block charges from DTV then tell DTV to contact your lawyer.
