Criminal law is the part of law dealing with the State prosecuting violators of their statutes which regulate conduct and behavior. There is a suspect, or a defendant, and the State is the prosecutor. This is distinguished from civil law in that civil law deals with one person harmed by another--the State is not a party.

If you do something wrong -- there are two ways that you can be held accountable -- by the person that you harmed (civil remedy) and by the govt (criminal penalties).

Criminal law is where the govt has made certain things illegal, and where the govt punishes people for certain actions.
