I would like to come over to the USA to work and travel for maybe 3 to 6 months, what kind of visa do I require as a british citizen and how do I go about abtaining it?

You may enter the U.S. to visit for up to 90 days under the visa waiver program and not need a visa. If you want to visit longer than 90 days you need to apply for a b2 visa. you cannot come under the visa waiver program and extend your time...it is for 90 days only. Now, it is nearly impossible to get a work visa ( same for U.S. citizens who go to the U.K.) You need to have an employer FIRST, then apply for work visa...and for a short term job, that is nearly impossible. Just to reiterate what Charlie said, if you think you can come to the United States to work and travel for 3-6 months then you are living in a dream world.
You can do one or the other.
As a British citizen you can travel to the States without a visa for 90 days. If you wish to stay longer then you need to apply for a tourist (B-2) visa which is valid for 6 months, but you need to prove that you can support yourself, financially, for this duration. However you are not permitted work under either of these options.
If you want to work, you need a work permit and to get one you need a job offer from a company based in the U.S. - which you won't get.

If you are looking for a work one, you need to get a secure job offer first, then go to the American Embassy in London for an interview for a visa. Good luck - its a nightmare!!
