there are several things being said about 2012 being the end of the world. EVERY one of them is false.
theres not going to be a magnetic pole reversal, that takes thousands of years. and if it did happen it wouldn't effect us other than our compasses would be backward.
lol, i love the one about the sun lining up with the black hole at the center of the galaxy. whoever came up with this is a dumb ***, the sun is always lined up with the center of the galaxy, and sophomore in high school can tell you that any 2 points are always lined up.
and no, we keep track of all large meteors and asteroids. the best chance of a comet hitting earth is in 2036, its called apophis, and there is a less than 1/100 chance it will hit us.
that whole meteor theory comes from the bible code, the biggest idiocy ever. people circled like every other word in the bible and supposedly every once in a while they would see something like meteor or nuclear war or something like that. but some guy, just to disprove it, did the same thing ti moby dick and found "prophecies". the same can be done with any large book. its all idiocy.
THE MAYAN CALENDAR DOES NOT END ON 2012!!!! its simply the beginning of another count, which is how the Mayans organized the calendar. its no different than going from 2007 to 2008, just because 2007 is ending doesn't mean the world is going to.

I can guarantee that _thousands_ of meteors will hit the Earth in 2012, just as thousands are hitting it in 2007. Hundreds of meteors hit the Earth every day, and can be seen every night; this is a perfectly normal occurrence. Nothing known to astronomers today is expected to cause any problems in the year 2012. All the 2012 rumours are made up by cranks trying to sell their books...don't believe them and, especially, don't encourage them by buying their books!

The meteor strike is predicted in what has been called the 'bible code'. There is a comprehensive article in the link below.
The 'Mayan calendar' also ends in 2012. I would suggest you take these 'forecasts' with a pinch of salt.
As far as I know, no meteor has been predicted for a strike in 2012 by astronomers.
On the other hand, there is one posing a danger in 2029, if you really want to scare yourself. See the second link.

i would be surprised if a meteor didn't hit the earth in 2012 since they are hitting the earth all the time so why should 2012 be any different.

The Apophis asteroid will pass so closely in 2029 it will actually be lower than our communications satellites. Originally it was feared that earth's gravity would alter its course so that the object would swing around and hit the planet in 2036.
The most recent calculations project the path of the asteroid will miss us on both occasions. You're safe.

No - there was something in the paper today about one hitting in 2036 though - they found out what it was made of so they can deal with it when the time is right. I am sure the 2012 one would have been mentioned if it was important.

I think this is boiled down from the Mayan prophesy, as interpretted....that the world will end in 2012. Someone just added the comet / meteor to it.

2012 just happens to be when the Mayan calendar ends. Nothing more than that. In 2032, we'll get a near-miss from an asteroid - to within 20,000 miles - but it's going to be a miss.
Relax. Exercise, take care of yourself - because Earth'll be around until we destroy ourselves.

My father keeps saying stuff about things happening in 2012. I don't know whether to believe it or not. It's kind of like people thought the world was going to end when 2000 came.
