you have to have a router that runs Network Address Translation (NAT) in order to share an Internet connection between computers.

Your service provider gives you 1 IP address. Each PC needs a unique IP address to function on the Internet. NAT hides the IP addresses your running on your LAN from the Internet. To the Internet your network looks like 1 PC. The router is the thing that sorts all that out. A switch can't do that.

Connect the router to the internet (cable modem, DSL modem, whatever source you have for broadband internet). Then connect all local PCs to the router. If you only want to share the internet connection (and not share resources among your computers) you're done. If you DO want to share files or printers among your local PCs, you need to run through the Network Setup wizard on each PC. Once you've done that, allow the network a few minutes for each of the PCs to recognize the others.

Router, both computers connected to that and the cable hooked up to the router, from there, use your network wizard. To behonest with you should be as easy as plugging everything in.
