The State pension is a pittance.
Each year a pensioner survives their pension, it only increases at about half the rate of true inflation.
Should they have a reasonably long retirement they will have every prospect of having outlived any savings they may have had.

Pensioners don't get GIVEN anything by the state - they've made compulsory contributions all their working lives from wages a lot lower then today's workers. Could you live on £80 a week? If you paid State Earnings Related Pension contributions [compulsory - now called 'extra pension'] you paid that from tax paid earnings and now that pension gets taxed again.
I agree workers need a tax break - don't we all!!! I saw the increase in earnings in 10 years of New Labour and the mammoth increase in the costs of living in 10 years of New Labour. But Tony's doing alright - £3m house in Chelsea, flats in Bristol and now looking at a country pile akin to the upper class born with a silver spoon in the mouth - another £3m - how's that for looking after the working man on £10,000k a year with a family of 3 to feed and raging council tax and petrol at more than £4.50 a gallon!!!!
The equation doesn't add up - and I was no good at maths at school! The theory is: More tax = more money in the Governments Bank Account = better services! The reality is More tax = more money in the government's Bank Account = 1 million more government employees = more money for their wages and pensions = less money for services. Now is that democracy at work?
If pensioners weren't paying so much tax on their pensions and everything else they buy - including being buried [a grave problem] they wouldn't need £100 winter fuel allowance and top ups.
Don't expect the Gordon highlanders to change anything in England and Wales - and in Wales pensioners have all had their homes rebanded 3 years ago now - our rates went up by £600 a year - don't go pubbing or betting either!

No.
They deserve a decent standard of living.
Most of today's pensioners fought in WW2 and have worked for over 40 years.
Free TV License and bus passes should start at 65 not 75.

The basic state pension is £87.30, most of the spending of pensioners is from savings when they worked, could you live on £87.30 and pay rent and council tax.
