Yes I have. What you will find is that most companies will not discuss anything beyond dates of employment without a written consent signed by you. Smaller companies that aren't aware that you can sue them for saying negative stuff about you, might say something negative , so it is a really good idea to check that out! It used to be an old code among HR people to ask if they were eligible for rehire, but even that is falling into dark territory legally. If you are a company and you like fighting lawsuits do what you want. Otherwise hire people on a probationary basis, or call a temp agency for a temp and "try" a person out for a while until you decide you like them.

No but what an awesome idea!! I'd be afraid they would recognize my voice, I'd get my friend to do it while I listen! I actually never list references on my resume, I put "available upon request." They can call my old employers if they want, which would be the most relevant information anyways. They should know that your references, which you choose, are going to say only good things about you. Good idea though, I will keep that in mind should I ever find myself applying for a new job!

No, I've done it personally before I began searching for a position anywhere in the USA or Canada. I was unemployed.
By law (in the USA), former employers can ONLY give out dates of employment -begin and end- . CANNOT give out why the termination happened.

No and I assumed nobody else did, either, least of all the prospective employer.
