i live in greece and want to travel to scotland for one week holiday, but i dont have a passport...can i go?

If you are a European Union national you can travel across EU with your identity card (and this does not necessarily have anything to do with the schengen treaty, it is applicable since the early 90's). However, if you have the old ID (with the greek characters on), it is a little bit risky with the British.
If you are not an EU citizen, you'd rather check with the embassy (but you would definitely need a passport).

I travel from Greece to the UK and many other EU countries with only my Greek ID (the new one with the Latin characters).
For all Greek citizens, there is no need for visa for any country in Europe, including EU.

you either need a new passport (passports have changed since 1/1/2007, if you have an old one it's invalid) or a new ID card (the ones with latin characters)...you can get both from a police station and it takes no more than a day...Scotland is considered EU so you don't need a visa...

Yes. whitin the european union you dont need to have a passport. Your id is enought. If you wanna travel outside the EU , like asia or africa, you will need a passport.

I live in portugal and i go to london all the time and i dont have a passport. Your ID is enough ands you dont need to worry about it.

If you still have doubts call the british embassy in greece but i garantee you dont need a passport.

We travel to the u.k. regularly only using Greek ID cards. As long as you have your id you can enter and leave the u.k. (England/Scotland). You certainly don't need a visa. Don't know why people who seem to travel are advising you otherwise. ID card is sufficient to travel throughout the European Union!!
If you are still in doubt ring the British Embassy as I did last time and they will confirm what I am saying.

If you are Greek you can travel with your national ID as long as it is a new one. My sister travelled to Scotland this summer with her ID only and she didn't have any problems. Of course it is much wiser to have a passport.

you need photo identity; i am a brit living in france and the french can travel using their carte de identity in europe so if you have such a system in greece, then it should be ok but you can check with a travel agent or look on the net to see what sort of identification is suitable, but i don't think a visa will do it

Thing is that you need a passport so that your country will register your leaving and by the UK your arrival. You won't probably need a visa though. I'm not sure, go to the UK Consular Office and ask.

Officially you don`t need a passport in the EU if you are an EU citizen and wish to travel within its borders,,,however in reality you wouldn`t be allowed on a plane without one,,,and certainly not from the UK to Greece,,
