Can someone please help me better understand the lyrics to this song. Specifically these verses:

You can't always get what you want
And if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

I'm trying to write a paper on it. Thanks a bunch!

"You can't always get what you want, BUT if you try sometimes, you might find, you get what you need"

It means that what you think you want is not always what you need, but sometimes, in trying to get what you want, instead you get what you really need.

around my church and a 12 step program there is a saying " Be careful what you assk/pray for" which is taken to mean that you may get what you asked for, what you "want" and it turns out to be not only a disappointment/ fiasco/problem but it is what YOU want or think you need.........and most times what you want and what you really NEED are two different things. Many times in trying to get what you "WANT" you stumble upon what you 'NEED' in the process, and discover what you wanted wasn't right/good/healthy for you and what you really need is totally different from your desires.

Much of the time, our wants are much greater than our needs. If we aim for the sky and only get halfway is it a success or a failure?

What we want is not necessarily what we need even if we don't realize it at the time. Try and think about that and you might realize why not...

Most of the Rolling Stones songs are jibberish to me. I guess they did too much dope smoking while writing them. Can't help you.
