He would not be asked to give up the throne. Kate Middleton is a perfectly suitable potential queen.

King Edward VIII was forced to abdicate by the British parliament. Although legally Edward could have married Mrs. Wallace Simpson and remained king, his various prime ministers opposed the marriage, arguing that the people would never accept her as queen. Edward knew that the ministry of British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin would resign if the marriage went ahead; this could have dragged the King into a general election thus ruining irreparably his status as a politically neutral constitutional monarch. Rather than give up Mrs. Simpson, Edward chose to abdicate, making him the only monarch of Britain, and indeed any Commonwealth Realm, to have voluntarily relinquished the throne. He is one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British history, and was never crowned.
As for now, no one is opposting this match since Kate Middleton is neither a divorcée nor a Roman Catholic. Even if she was a divorcée, she could still become Queen of England (that law has been uplifted long time ago, the current Duchess of Cornwall is also a divorcée).
Is there a reason why Prince William of Wales should give up his right to the throne for Kate Middleton? Honestly, I don't think she is worth that big of a sacrifice. Prince William is such a nice well-mannered gentleman, he will definitely be a great monarch since he has got two great inspirations in his life, his granny the Queen and his mother, the late Diana, Princess of Wales. All he needs to do is to let Kate Middleton go, and find himself a more suitable match.

No, he won't have to, because Kate is not a) an American, and b) divorced, which were the two major issues against Wallis Simpson in 1935/36.
The question is: Why on earth would Kate ever sign up for such a dreadful job?

You know, I wonder if he will have to worry about it. I mean, first of all, will the Queen ever step down??? Come on, give someone else a chance lady! Uh oh, inappropriate, huh? Seriously though, how long has Prince Charles waited? If he ever is king, then how long will it be before Prince William gets his chance? I think Kate is probably the least of his worries.

I don't get it. Isn't Prince William's girlfriend British? Why would he have to give up the throne if he marries her? Maybe I am missing some of the details. ....
