Love it. It usually happens when I'm the Chairperson of a committee and I'm addressed as "Madam Chair."
I've never had a problem with it.

I'm a guy, but I have been called Ma'am! LOL
When I was younger, I had no sign of facial hair and had long hair, thin build. I was at work, and some old lady said, "Excuse me, Ma'am?" It was so weird! I never thought I looked like female at all, I wasn't wearing girly clothes. Maybe she forgot her glasses or was mocking my long hair.
So, as for me....well, needless to say, I didn't really appreciate being called Ma'am.
Most of the girls I know don't like it either. I had a friend who was single and her phone was listed in the book as "S. Cantrell". She's get calls from telemarketers all the time asking for "Mr. or Mrs. Cantrell" and Stephanie would get so mad and scream "I"m NOT a MRS! Thank for reminding me I'm all alone!" And hang up. LOL She'd also get upset and being called Ma'am or Madam, and respond, "I'm sorry, I'm not a Madam...I'm only a Miss." And give the saddest face you ever saw. She really was okay with being single....but she hated to be refferred to as married or old.

As if I am running a brothel! I had a female coworker who always called me madam and she was only 2 or 3 years younger than me and neither of us was married. I finally got her to stop saying that. In a way, I think it de-personalizes someone. Using my name would have been nicer.

A little bit ridiculous, especially when I am at the cash register or something. I feel like I am being mocked or something, like they think calling me madam is funny since I'm just a child.

Madam, that would be weird for this area. But Ma'am is normal. I'm not a Miss anymore. I think of it as a term of respect. It's a lot better than "Hey you!" I consider it a very polite word. Like "Ma'am, you dropped your wallet." Or "Ma'am, you forgot your keys." I have no problems with that term.

Nobody really ever calls me madam but it sounds pretty classy and really proper. Kinda like what a butler or a servant would call you. But I can tell u that I hate it when someone of the male species approaches me and calls me "ma", "mama" , or "mami" that pisses me off something awful I hate that!

I feel old. Madame is french for women who are middle aged for married.
Madamoiselle is for young women and single gals.
Could be worst, they could call me Ma'am.

It is meant to be demeaning if you are young, and then when you get old it is meant as a teasing compliment. So anyone young should feel affronted when called this. The correct answer is "yes, madam" or "yes, sir" to whomever said that, if you want to express your frustration, or "where?" if you want to be sarcastic.
