My little girl is 3 weeks old and she kind of cries when she is in the middle of a BM. IS this normal?
I don't recall if my son did this, but then he is 10!

Thanks

yes, because you and your 10 year old are used to it. If you're a baby, it's an awful feeling.

Okay, first of all, all these folks who are recommending fruit and juice for a three week old, do not have a clue. Do NOT give your baby fruit or juice. My son is five weeks old, and he also cries during bowel movements. She is likely gassy, or just doesn't like the feeling. You should certainly address any concerns you have with your pediatrician if you're unsure, but I really wouldn't worry about it in the meantime. So long as she is wetting and soiling an adequate number of diapers every day, she's probably just fine. Take care, and congratulations.

Maybe she is constipated. It could be that she hurts during a BM, which could be relieved in different ways. My son was always that way. The doctor suggested different ways to cure it, like giving him more water, which he hated and wouldn't take. The doctor also suggested baby suppositories, available at any store. That worked better. Whatever you do, though, ask your doctor.

Because it can be uncomfortable. Think about it, ever had an uncomfortable bowel-movement? Of course you have. You have the advantage of perspective and bodily-control, they have neither. Is your child's bowel large or hard? Is there any bleeding in the stool? (You may need a fecal occult blood test for that determination) Is the child's anus showing any signs of irritation? if there is ANYTHING questionable in the movement, see your pediatrician, otherwise, give comfort and a gentle cleaning.

You may want to have her checked because my brother in laws son did cry and they found that he had fissures. Its tiny cracks around the area. It could be several things so I would be on the safe side and call her pediatrician. Good luck, I have three and its always a something new with each one. Take care.

Maybe its coming out too hard. She may need more water in her diet or something that will make the BM easier on her. Ask her pediatrician for advice or go to www.whattoexpect.com for advice.

I'm not sure that all do, my daughter did but I could hear her tummy rumbling with it so I assumed it was from cramping or pressure. I have cared for many babes that did not do this and some that did.

Are her stools normal colour and consistancy? she is not passing any blood at all? Are you nursing or formula feeding?

It probably either hurts or just feels wierd. Everything is new to babies and possibly a little scary.

Is she constipated? Check to make sure she is not bleeding when she poops. She also might not like the feeling. It's not the most comfortable feeling.
