I've heard that 70% of Americans are below world average intelligence. Is this true, and if not, what is the real figure?

While I would be tempted to believe this, it may be skewed a bit. I would say third world countries would average 70%, but not America.
I DO know that the average IQ for Americans is 99 and that Japan is like 115 and Europe hovers around 108.

Like I said, the idiots I have to deal with on a daily basis makes me want to believe 90% of Amreicans are below average, but I'm sure that's not fact.

I'd doubt its true. It's probably just a rumour. It also depends on which people you are looking at. The intelligent people are the people more likely to get into the census. The poor people are less likely to have a good education and as a result do not have a high average intelligence.

But I doubt it is 70! Perhaps 50. Maybe 60 at a push. It's about 20-30 in LEDCs where literacy rates can be as much as 10%

It's not a matter of intelligence. Intelligence by definition is the capacity to learn that has nothing to do with cultural or national boundaries.

But Americans are definitely deficient in what they know. Americans do far worse than most other nations in math, languages and science education, and have a very high illiteracy rate compared with others in the industrialized world. This leaves us open to be taken for a ride by the fast-talking politicians and corporations that convince us that what they're doing is best for us.

We need to wise up. Treat teachers better and pour more money into education, especially at the elementary level.

thats not true, everyone is above average :-)

Seriously, that figure sounds a little suspect. Mostly because IQ tests definitely have a bit of western bias in the first place, and education does improve IQ scores. So while I doubt we are anywhere near the top, I don't think our education system is bad enough compared to the rest of the world to create that result...

Ah, who am I kidding, we're a bunch of dumbasses. I still would need to look up that figure to confirm it though.

Not exactly what you want but:

Considering that China is only a little above the US, while Russia and India both rank lower, I doubt that 70% of Americans could be below the world average.
That's assume the referred to data is correct.

People asking questions like this are definitely below average in IQ!

Giving false information is not a sign of intelligence.

Statistically speaking, 50% of Americans are below average and 50% are above average. Also, about 75% of statistical analyses are made up for political or other purposes.

I haven't heard that...but I know they have a reputation for not being the smartest people in the world. Also a few people on here (americans) really aren't very intelligent, but some are...or at least it seems that way to me...

i does not doubt it... unhappy, huh? Ha, to everybody who stated that people who have self assurance in a faith have decrease IQs, that isn't genuine in any respect. i'm a young person Christian and my IQ is above everyday. (via fairly some factors!) however, i do no longer stay interior america, I stay in Italy.

Just because you HEAR it, that doesnt mean that its true.
But Yeah pretty close most Americans could care less about how smart they are and how unsmart they are.
Btw its more about 60 % of Americans,
But NO one knows exactually is all just an estimate on the average.
