Yeah you HAVE to, if you don't have a firewall running you are open to all kinds of viruses, if you want a good free one I recommend Zone-alarm, been using it for a year, no problems.
Also the about not being able to get onto the net, there are a few options, you could already have a virus of some sort, there could be a problem with the internet provider or your router. I'mnot an expert, but to me it sounds like you may already have a virus, maybe you could ask that as a seperate question?

For any kind of security concern, the system firewall is the first line of defence.
So, you need to keep your firewall on and activated.
And in your question you have not mentioned, whether your antivirus protection has real-time protection.
and it doesn't then you would need to install a antivirus program that has real time protection.
Since, only real-time protection can only provide you with the kind of security that you need to have.
And also you would need to install a spyware program that has real-time enabled.
All the above mentioned could provide with the best kind of protection that could desire.
Keeping in mind that you also have a good firewall software installed as well.
I would recommend you with the "Comodo Firewall Pro" which could directly be downloaded from their site.
Just google it.

You should, yes, have a firewall. Comodo is a good one, and it's free. (It has a "training" period, and will annoy you with messages about "Some piece of software is trying to do thus and so, and do you want to allow it?" ...so you'll have to go through that for awhile, but it's good to have.)
You should also have anti-spyware (like Spybot search and destroy, and Lavasoft Adaware, for two...or AVG puts out a companion piece of free anti-spyware, also free.)
Finally, virus and spyware, and other "malware" is not the only stuff that can make your computer slow...you have to watch out for tuning issues, and watch out for some chump next door sneaking into your network because you (like I did for awhile) forgot to set a password on the router...and maybe you need to do some fine-tuning on your computer, like defragmenting your disk, or not running programs that don't need to run at startup, and on, and on...
