A few months ago we stayed at the Travelodge near Scarborough.
We didn't get there until after 10, by the time we'd dumped our stuff and walked across to KFC the doors were shut.
However the drive thru was still open so we walked to the window and asked to place an order.
They refused unless we went and got our car and drove through.
Okay it was only 200 yds away but was that not a case of extracting the urine?
(The manager looked as though he hadn't started shaving yet, he was just saying that he couldn't do it.)
In the end we walked across to Tesco and got sandwiches and crisps.
Anyone else got similar stories?

I used to work in a hotel, very minimum wage, but it didn't mean I didn't give a toss about the customers.
I can see the logic of not serving a customer on foot, after all there's never ever been a case of a driver with a gun robbing anything.

I disagree with most of these answers. I have been working in food for about 8 years and even before I became a manager I really liked it. I have to say that I am always pleasant with my customers unless it is someone that is giving me or my employees a hard time. They weren't being rude by not serving you they were just being cautious. How many people do you see ordering on foot in the drive thru??? For all they know you were some insane person. And what would happen if a car did come? And perhaps did not see you standing there? What was so hard about you going through in your car? It's just a stereotype that most restaurant workers are rude and careless. I have been at a lot of other places to eat and received great service! Of course there will always be a few that really don't like their jobs so will make a ad experience for you but don't put us all in the same group!

I used to work in fast food when I was younger. We were never allowed to serve people who walked up to the drive thru window. Apparantly it's for safety reasons. Apparantly it's easier for a someone to rob us on foot than in a car. But honestly, we could break the rules and serve a starving tourist. But that would require work. Which we choose not to do. I got paid minimum wage, there was no way way I was going above and beyond what I was supposed to do for no reward. lol.

I have worked in a fast food place for nearly 2 years and yes we do care about the customers. things like that, i dont know why the front door would be closed and drive was open but where i work we cant serve people on foot because other than the safety hazzard, everyone would start doing it when they could just go by foot. just like people complaining when we cant serve them if we've only just closed, we do want to go home and have started packing up, so you should come in between our open ours and not get pissed off when we wont serve you.

Check this out -- they actually have a law in Michigan that states fast food restaurants may not serve customers that "walk up" to the drive through window. Apparently it's a safety thing (the law was passed after a fast food worker was killed by someone who walked up to the window, pretended to order food, then pulled out a gun and demanded money and ended up shooting the employee when she didn't hand the cash over).

Them not serving you when walked through the drive thru lane is a liability issue. ALL fast food restaurants do the same thing. Next time you go through a drive thru look at the window there will be a sign posted. Banks also do this

Same thing happened to us, they won't serve you in the drive-thru unless you have a car to "drive thru".
And no, no one in the fast-food industry really cares about the customer!!!! It's a min. wage job for goodness sakes! They don't make tips and don't care if you come back! Especially the big chains. blah.

That guy gets paid the same if he serves you or if he follows the corporate rules (which clearly states no one is to be served on foot at the drive through. for their own safety and the safety of the employees) So if you were in his shoes, would you rather break rules and work harder or follow them and continue to slack off? Either way you only gets 6 bucks for that hour of your life.

The reason you have to go through with a car is for insurance purposes. They wouldn't have any if you walk or take a bike through. Same at a bank or anywhere else that has a drive up.

No fast food companies only care about meeting the health codes so they dont get fined. they would not care if they did not have too. they use a lot of trend words too like USDA grade meat just because it was graded dont think its good meat. usually the grade of meat fast food uses is D or DD. DD is damaged and Dieseased
it sounds as if the night manager in your situation was a moron he should have known better you never, never turn away business

I one time walked through a Carls Jr. They didnt say anything because it was in the middle of the night and there wasnt anyone in line. If it was slow, I dont see why there should have been a problem. Money is money.
