The redback spider is a part of the 'widow' family. We get them here in Australia everywhere in the suburbs and they are quite poisonous - not enough to kill an adult but can cause death in small children and the elderly. I have found some that were dark brown and some also had striped legs. I'm assuming that there are similar redbacks in America so definitely get rid of any you find, especially as you have two young boys - just to be on the safe side. =) I just saw a picture of a brown widow and it looks exactly as you described - brown striped legs and all. Latrodectus geometricus.

Check out spiders in the genus Tegenaria. In the UK this includes the two most common house spiders T. domestica and T.gigantica. I imagine these have a fairly global distributions because of the ease with which they can get shipped with people's belongings.

As Lee says, all spiders are venemous but very few have mouth parts capable of piercing human skin.

All spiders are venomous to some degree. This appears to be an immature spider, I do not know the exact species.
