If I were the president I would put a $5.00 tax on every gallon of fuel made from imported crude.

Watch how fast the US is able to switch to Bio Diesel and the Saudis go back to herding goats at the oasis.

i can think of a whole lot of things that bush can do to make the nation a better place...and setting gas prices isn't on the list. when gas was only $1.50, the economy still sucked, so i don't see how it would get better by that alone. besides that, he can't set the prices...and even if he could, it would infuriate the people who are paying less than $2.50 now (yes, they exist!). he's done such a number on the economy these last 7 or so years that we're gonna have a rough time getting out from under the nonsense that's been piling up! honestly, i believe that at this point, bush could completely do away with taxes, and people would still want him out of office. gas prices are the least of our worries...

A small amount in the short term, but the US needs to get off oil and especially foreign oil. The US is broke and needs to move beyond oil, the energy of the past. The world is past peak oil and we'll be better off when everyone see that.

This is seperate from the fact that Bush and Cheney are oil men. When you put two oil men in the white house, which way did you think oil prices would go?

No. The government cannot control the price of gasoline other than to subsidize it. If the true price of gas goes over 2.50$ a gallon then we will not have the ability to get it. No one would ever sell a product at a loss. If you want shortages, get the government involves in price control. Of course thee will be plenty of gas on the black market where the true price will be observed, only problem with that is the unregulated profiteering that will cause the price to go even higher.

The gas price in my area is nearly that now, it is around $2.62

The President has no power to set such a price. The President and Congress for that matter, do not have the
power to tell a private company what to sell their product for.

The Founding Fathers would shutter at such a thought, the government controlling our markets in such a way.

Our government already has too much control, regulation & taxation on our economy. We need less of it.

In the state I live in our legislature passed a law many years ago that sets a minimum at which gas prices must be set. Many other states have similar legislation. This is simply ridiculous, and in my opinion blatantly unconstititional.

If this legislation was removed gas prices would be well under $2.00 a gallon because places like Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, and other large retailers would actually sell gas at a loss to get you to come in and buy other products.

The government is the problem and not the solution.

Yes. Better yet at $2.00 per gallon our economy would start to thrive and the oil companies would still make huge profits.
Do you really think bush wants to do anything to improve the economy that would take away any of his oil profits?

For all you spouting econ. oil companies (oligopolies) have very little competition. In a market with little competition we do not get the lowest prices. Pay attention or you'll become educated idiots.

If i could save $50 a week in gas by a lower price I would be able to buy other goods and services with that money. In turn it would spread money to a greater section of the economy and the economy would get better. The problem is the president cannot set the price, however anytime the government threatens an investigation into price fixing the price falls quickly.

To those who gave me a thumbs down I can tell you flunked econ 101 or never had econ 101.

It would help out some, because it would help drive some costs down on transported goods.

Remember gas price average before Bush took office was around 1.75 p/g. Before Bush, I could fill up my gas tank up at 27 bucks, not it cost me about 52 bucks to fill up.

Bush or no president can set the price of gas. The financial markets are whats driving the price of gas. Anyone who disagrees is in a coma.

He wouldn't limit his oil CEO buddies to that small a profit margin. Under Bush, oil CEOs have a right to jack up the price as high as they want.

Bush can't set the price of gas. The market does. If the go'vt were to slap on price controls, the supply would dry up.
