I keep my dog food in a plastic tub with a sealed lid in the garage. Something has been chewing along the plastic edges of the lid. Is this chipmunks or rats? Ideas to get them out are also appreciated.

It's probably rats or mice. I had rats in an apartment once who chewed through the foil-backed fiberglass insulation in a stove and they started living under the cook top. They even used the fiberglass for nesting material.

Mice and rats are incredibly adept at squeezing into tight places. So, even if you have a small gap under the garage door or somewhere else in the garage, they're going to get in. Especially since they know there's a source of food in there. So, the only way to eliminate them is to trap them.

Mouse/rat traps (the standard springy kind) are very effective. Bait them with peanut butter and set them out near the food bin at night. Repeat every night until you go a couple days without catching anything. And, make sure your dog(s) don't mess with the traps. It can be quite painful if they stick their nose in the wrong place.

Mice and squirrels will chew on just about anything, to get at food.
Please consider not using pellet rat/mouse bate that they would eat. This does not kill them immediately, they run off and can be caught and eaten by someones pet.
This happened to me, very hard to take!
There are different traps, some you do not even see the rodent when trapped.
Squirrels may need a small trap such as a 'tender trap' it will trap them live and then they can be relocated.
Pest control companies can assist you with this issue also.
Good luck, the critters are moving into warmer areas with the change of seasons.

Rats. Put out some traps and Decon. (Make sure the puppies stay out of the garage while the traps and poison are out) This change in weather forces them into garages to nest.
Also, if it is rats, you will see little mice droppings everywhere.

Of the lid? It's probably your dog. Mine does the same thing, he's so destructive. If it's a short tub, yep, probably mice. Put out some decon pellets where your dog can't get to it.

Mice or rats If your garage is closed, it would be the small rodents. Opossums & raccoons will go after dog food, too.

Mice sounds about right, they love dog food, when I was breeding them, that is what I fed them. They will chew up plastic.

Goats do, but I don't think that's the problem here. :-) Chipmunks are too cute to kill, but the others, now, kill 'em!

You could get a cat. I think, though, that you might prefer the mice as they feed themselves, are quiet in the house, and don't require attention...

Good luck!
