Because the truth is of those 70 percent only about 5 or 6 percent actually care and would take to the streets or write to Congressmen to stop the war and senseless killing and since that is not enough to stop anything let alone a major war - The Iraq war will continue .

The Democratic congress has introduced many bills to withdraw troops from Iraq, but the Republicans are blocking all their efforts; the only way would be to cut off the funds and they feel that would endanger our troops. It's incredible, the neocons start the war and then blame the Democrats for not ending it. Bush's father wouldn't even go into Baghdad, because he knew all the senseless killing that would produce and destabilize the country, why do you think we supported Saddam in the 80's, and Bin Laden in Afghanistan, and the Shah of Iran for thirty years. Now we're paying for trying to run the world, just as the British did.

Political tactics really.
The only real way the Democratic Party can end the war is to defund it. This would leave a GIANT hole for the Cons to exploit for the next 50 years: "Dems left our soldiers out there without the proper supplies and equipment, there's blood on their hands, we were winning the war until the Dems pulled the plug, etc." it would be a total bonanza for the Republican strategists. And, personally, I think a lot of ignorant people out there would blame the Democrats.
So sad to say, it's all about politics and politicians just don't make bold moves.

Actually, I think the survey revealed that a high percentage of people don't agree with how the war is being fought now.
That means that some people want to leave, and others may want to fight even harder.
The Democrats can end the war RIGHT NOW by simply not allowing any bills for funding come to a vote in the House, where all spending bills must originate and there is no filibuster rule. (It's not a question of having a veto-proof majority; all they have to do is NOT pass a funding bill to start with!) If they have not done so, it must mean that they do not believe the public would support such a move.

Apparently for two reasons:
1) They have came to the conclusion that despite what the majority of the American people think, Iraq will be too unstable if we immediately pull out.
2) Even if the House withdraws funding (which is all they really can do) Bush is probably crazy enough to keep the soldiers there any way.

The first answer has it correct. Yes congress can simply not fund the war but look what happened when they had the first showdown over troop funding. Bush held out while the troops suffer and threatened to leave them there funding or no funding. Who in their right mind would or could allow Bush to do that.

70% is a little far fetched. But I guess they told you that at move on or daily cos. Anyway the dem congress is failing becuse there is a deep division there. The far left has control (Pelosi and Reid) but the more moderate dems still have enough power to do what is right. That is stay until we finish the job and support our troops. Not turn tail and run and bash Bush every chance they get....

Because the Democrats don't have that big of a majority margin, i.e., they don't have enough votes overturn the presidents veto.
