In Mexico, people go to mass on the evening on the 24th, then have dinner and open their gifts; instead of doing a large meal during the day and opening their presents on the 25th. Is this a Christian tradition or is it just a Latin tradition?

I'm in Canada and I know people who go to midnight mass, then when they come home from Church they have a meal, open their gifts and then go to sleep.

I personally tend to enjoy going to midnight mass, have a late meal and then open presents early in the morning.

I am not sure what tradition it is but my family never did that and we are christian, we would go to midnight mass and we would have a big dinner and open up one present, then the rest in the morning. Now we do what you do but we have a big Christmas day dinner as well.

Here in England some of us go to mass on the 24th its great.
But on Christmas day we open our presents and have a large Christmas Dinner usually in the afternoon.

When the Children were only young I use to let them open one of the gifts under the tree before they went to bed on Chirstmas eve. But that was not tradition just personal choice.

I think it really depends on the persons involved. Most cultural influences put more emphasis on Christmas eve, probably because of midnight mass.
I cherish Christmas day and in the Anglican Tradition, Midnight mass as well (when I actually go!).

The main thing is to enjoy in the way we are comfortable.

THEY MORE OLD TRADITONS CHANGE THE MORE COMPLICATED THIS ANSWER IS! SOME LATIN STILL DO IT THE WAY YOU SPEAK OPENING EARLY..BUT MY FAMILY NEVER DID. WE WOULD GO TO MASS ON THE 24TH ON MIDNIGHT TO CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF GOD. WE WOULD MAKE FOOD PREPS THAT NIGHT ALSO. THEN WE WOULD ALL GATHER WITH ALL OF THE EXTENDED FAMILY AND EXCHANGE GIFTS FROM ONLY THE EXTENDED FAMILY. BUT MY IMMEDIATE FAMILY (BROTHERS & SISTERS) COULD NOT OPEN GIFTS UNTIL THE 25TH. SO ON THE EVE WE SPENT WITH EXTENDED AND THE DAY OF WE SPENT WITH IMMEDIATE FAMILY.
