The one I want to include is an executive at AT&T, but I've never worked for the company. Character reference? I'm new at this. :(

Reference on your resume are people who can vouch for your skill and knowledge, moral character, credit standing, etc., A relative is not a good reference, Companies normally requests them be replaced. Simple you need people who can vouch for you other than your relative up to the second degree of consanguinity and affinity.

Normally you place a reference (a person) to vouch for: one credit standing, second moral character, third skill and knowledged (normally these are ex employers, supervisor etc.)

I hope I was able to help you by my answer.

Not if they know your work ethics, but if it's just to put an executive's name from a large company then yes it is.
