I'm right with you. I was a very active and practicing Roman Catholic through college. I even started a Newman Club on my campus and was very active in getting religious oriented activities going on campus. After that, I got so tired of hearing political messages from the pulpit and NOTHING about what I considered the true message/role of the Church. The antiabortion messages from a patriarchal, patronizing male dominated arrogant "leadership" left me feeling bereft rather than fulfilled. I left in the very early 1980's and have never ventured back.

I was raised Catholic also. I stopped going after my confirmation because then my mother couldn't make me go. I wouldn't have even been confirmed if it was not for my mom's insistence. Truthfully, I have never been a very religious person. I do believe in having a spiritual side, but I question the world too much to subscribe to any one religion or belief system. I agree with you about the politics in the church, and the Catholic church is the worst I believe.
As of now I am happily agnostic. Whether or not I choose to embrace religion later in life remains to be seen. However, I probably will never attend any kind of service, I just don't see the point.
Edit: I also agree with above who talked about services just asking for money. The church I went to is a historical church, and had to be kept up in a grand way, on the parishioners' dime. It is a beautiful church but come on! Every service, people were pressured to give, give, give for new crystals on the chandeliers, new gold leaf on the ceiling. As if! I doubt anything was ever given to charity. No wonder the catholics are losing followers.

I had to stop going, because unfortunately, since moving to Nebraska about 6-6 1/2 years ago (September of 2009), it has been impossible for me to find a church that is within walking distance of any of the places I have lived. The only one that proved to be convenient transportation-wise was a non-denominational church called Lifegate, which I attended from late July of 2013 until early-to-mid-March of 2014, as my support staff (I lived in an extended family home setting) was able to take me and bring me home as it was only a mile away from their apartment.
Since that time, however, finding a church to be able to attend every Sunday has been next to impossible, as I have found out the hard way that there is absolutely no church within walking distance of this apartment building that I have lived in for the past two years (I moved into the area in March of 2014), and unfortunately, there are only two churches within close distance of here. One is a non-denominational church called Life Church on West Center Road in Canfield Plaza directly west of 84th Street; the other is an Assembly of God church (the denomination I've grown accustomed to) called Glad Tidings; unfortunately, this church is about two miles away from here. If I was to try to get over there on Sunday mornings, I would have to get up at 6am on Sunday mornings, be out the door by 7:15, maybe 7:20 at the very latest; from there, I would have to catch the first-available downtown bound bus at 84th and Center, ride up to Bergan Mercy Transit Center, where I would have to wait on a northbound bus that would take me to 72nd and Hickory Street, and from there, I would have maybe 30 minutes or so (I could possibly walk around Walmart for a brief period) to kill before I had to make my way back to this church. Unfortunately, both of the afore-mentioned churches are just too far away from where I live. For that reason, I am no longer able to attend on a regular basis.

Honestly. After a lot of thought I decided: Yes I believe in God but I don't want to follow a sinner down the path of righteousness. I know i am going to make mistakes but as long as I try to do the right things and continue to have a good relationship with Him then why not pray where ever I choose. God wont send me to hell for not going.

I studied philosophy and got too logical. I began to doubt whether anyone could conclusively prove or disprove the existence of God, much less comprehend and sermonize His likes and dislikes. If there is a Creator of the universe my humble opinion is that all the opinions and ideas of all humans through time could be put together and still not come anywhere near defining or describing Him (or Her).

I agree! I stopped going to the catholic church many years ago for 2 reasons:
1) They charged for Sunday School...
2) Last mass attended-The sermon was all about give more money...more...more.

I stopped going because I honestly wasn't getting anything out of the services, and I didn't feel right pretending to worship God one day out of the week when I was more comfortable praying at home when I really needed to. That, and the last church I went to had some really nasty, racist people.

No. i for my section locate it offensive that a company feels that it may get me closer to my God for some products of silver a week. i'm able to consult my God each time i desire. He can refer to me each time He needs (which isn't that sometimes surely, i think of he's busy answering prayers interior the middle East). yet what supplies one guy the superb to play middleman between myself and God? while i seem at a equipment like the Catholic Church and anticipate that in the back of the doorways of the Vatican there is exceptional wealth then seem on the abject poverty good Catholics international stay in, I basically see some thing incorrect with prepared faith. Then there is the pedophilia, the infidelity between ministers.... who became into it, Orel Roberts? That have been given up and cried begging forgiveness for banging a hooker? Then did it returned! (hi if I basically cry on television they nevertheless deliver their funds, candy!) Nope, I in common terms circulate to church for weddings and funerals. If i desire to work out God and refer to him I in common terms could desire to stroll out to my backyard and spot the vegetation, pay attention to the birds chorale, experience the breeze on my face to appreciate he's there.

I stopped going when the Church went touchy-feely. Singing your way through the Mass and hugging your pew-mate. More like being at beach party than a house of God.
