In the formula for the roots (-b +/- sqrt(b^2 - 4ac)) / 2a, the discriminant is b^2 - 4ac.

So the roots in this question must include i (sqrt of -1). Clearly this rules out answers B, C and D.

Answer A is valid for suitable values of a, b and c.
