I'm going to be 25 by the time I move there in fall of 2009. I plan on attending ASU for grad school. Where is a good place for a young, middle-class couple to live? I'd prefer somewhere a little north of Phoenix in the hopes of a bit cooler weather, but we'd still need to commute into Phoenix for work and school. Anyone know of any affordable cities north of Phoenix for a young couple to live?

I lived in Glendale Arizona last year and I found it to be pretty boring. I wish I would have moved to the East side of Phoenix. I would recommend Tempe, Mesa or Scottsdale. Scottsdale is pretty expensive though, but definitely go to the East side.

How are you defining affordable? The only difference you will see in prices for Phoenix and its many suburbs is housing. All other items will be pretty much the same. There are a few exceptions, for example Mesa does not have property taxes. Metro Phoenix is a HUGE area, our roads have not kept up with population growth, and public transportation is horrible here. If you plan to attend the main campus of ASU in Tempe, you don't want to move out to say Anthem (which is North). It is just as hot and you will spend 2+ hours per day commuting.

Tempe can be a good area with reasonable housing prices, just stay more towards the freeway instead of campus unless you are into the college party life. Chandler and Gilbert can also be reasonable and decent suburbs, just do your homework because there is a lot of variation between neighborhoods there. Far East Mesa south of the freeway works but can be a commute hassle if you have to travel during rush hours. If you plan to stay awhile, I would honestly recommend looking in the Ahwatukee area. Housing prices will be a bit higher than other areas but, because of the area, there is no chance of losing on the investment as there is in other neighborhoods. It is one of the best areas with lowest crime rates and top schools in Arizona. Lots of apartments / condos too if you want to rent.

You want to live in Tempe, Mesa or Apache Junction.

You have to go a loooong way north of Phoenix to avoid the hot weather. Like north of Sedona. It all has to do with the Mogollon Rim, everything south of that is hot low desert. North of that is high desert and much cooler. The Mogollon Rim runs roughly along AZ 260. Don't buy the BS that it's a dry heat, it's still bleeping hot, but it isn't as bad as a hot summer day in Florida.

Phoenix doesn't have a good highway system, most people use surface streets to get around. If you lived across Phoenix in say Glendale you will spend a significant amount of time commuting and burning up gas (remember you will be running that A/C).

I would suggest you look East of Phoenix...Tempe/Mesa/Gilbert would be good areas to look at!! They are all close to Phoenix and would be close for work and school. I would try and look from Broadway south to Elliott Road and work east!! That way you are close to the 10, 60, 101 and 202 freeways. I would suggest not going north of Phoenix...its gets kind of into the slum areas if you go north!!!!!

I hope that helps!!!!!!!!!

Tempe or South scottsdale...very centrally located and close to alot of things....other areas close by way of the 101....south of tempe...ahwahtukee (m/s?) it is just south of tempe and lot further down and to the east would be chandler....going further north in phx to avoid the weather wouldnt do you much good...the commute would be a bear.

Another place would be NE Mesa...the area that is close proximity to the 202 that runs east west across the top part of mesa and into tempe.. It is alittle higher in elevation and a bit breezier. We had friends who lived in the Las sendas community in that area and it was nice.

It won't make sense to move North of Phoenix and commute to ASU, it's way to far. Tempe is ASU College town, and everything is close by.

Definitely Tempe for the reasons people mentioned above. Maybe South Scottsdale or Mesa as well. You won't be able to avoid the heat if you go to ASU. If anything, you will spend alot more time driving in the heat.
