That is a good age for stacking toys/blocks. Something as simple (and that you probably have handy) as tupperwares that fit into each other can really grab their attention. Also, hiding toys- where something goes into a hidden spot- like a toy car into a garage- really amuses them because they are just learning that things exist, even when they can't see them anymore.

Stacking toys or blocks
Pails, cups and other unbreakable containers
Mirrors(unbreakable of course) or all sizes
Large building blocks
Toy boxes that push open, move or make noise
Squeezable toys Cars, trucks and other similar toys as long as they are made of flexible plastic and have no sharp or removable parts
Large balls that a child can grasp or push yet not small enough to fit into the mouth
Cardboard books with large diagrams or pictures

Depends on the child.
Mine plays with walking toys, and toddler toys. He's well advanced. The ones marked for 12 months a lot of the time are too boring for him. He's the same age as your son.
You'll have to watch how he plays and then set up his toys accordingly.

My 10 month old loves fitting things into places - he has a Busy Ball Popper which he enjoys stuffing other toys into!

It says 9 months and up but your son is nearly 9 months and my son was fascinated with this toy when he was just 6 months!
Also, anything which will stimulate him to practice his hand/eye coordination such as:

My son has this "Rabbit in a Lettuce " puppet and he loves it! We make up stories with the Rabbit and the insects and he gets so excited and wants to grab them!! He always ends up chewing on the Ladybird for some reason:

My son also loves his "Tomy Discovery Dome" (He's lost 3 of the balls though! Argh!)

His Mega-Bloks

And his Early Learning Centre Light-and-Sound phone
