The heartbeat theory is one old wives tale that has persisted beyond many others, probably because the idea behind it seems very scientific - i.e. that male and female heartbeats differ for concrete, physiological reasons.
My own midwife said that in her many years of experience she has found this theory to be "fairly accurate," and more than any other she has heard about.
However, there are just as many that will tell you it's not reliable at all. NONE of my 3 children fit the pattern at all.
And two major medical studies have proven that fetal heart rate is not a proven predictor of gender. You can read more about it here:

Links to the scientific data are included as well.

I think its really neat to read all the old wives tales about a baby's sex. My baby's heartbeat is over 150 bmp, but I still truly believe that I am having a girl. It is a very strong feeling that I have had for some time now. My D/D is less then a month away, so we will find out then.

They say other 160 a girl and 140 and under are boys but I don't think it matters because with my son he stayed in the 160s and I was happy because I thought I was having a girl but it turned out to be a boy so I think that is just a myth

While this is definitely an old wives tale realm, I will tell you from my vast experience with fetal monitoring pregnant women, that boys tend to have slower heart rates (110-130) while girls tend to be faster (140-160). I have also had several neonatologists tell me that infant boys up to 1 year old have on average a slower resting heart rate than girls. So there is some truth to it. But it isn't consistent enough to use it as a scientific basis for determining gender.
All three of my children fit the trend. Yours might not.

But don't go by the heartbeat.
That isn't very accurate.
