Now the answer to this depends upon which of the poles you are talking about. There is a true north/south pole and a magnetic north/south pole -which moves. If you are talking about the magnetic north/south pole then the answer is that the needle would wobble around and probably not stabilise. If you are at the true pole then the needle would point towards the magnetic pole.

I've answered a similar question some time ago. If you have a compass that allows needle inclination as well as rotation then at the magnetic South Pole the needle would point straight up in the air, whereas at the magnetic North Pole it would point straight down into the ground/ice.
Magnetic field lines near the equator point more or less horizontal, but by definition, magnetic field lines at the South Pole point vertical up (and vertical down at the North Pole). A compass needle wants to align itself with the ambient magnetic field. When we take a compass reading in lower latitudes (closer to the equator) the compass needle swings freely on its pivot, but if we were to use that same compass in Antarctica, the north end of the compass needle becomes pinned up against the glass faceplate! This vertical component of the magnetic field is known as 'inclination'.

If you are on the geographic NOrth Pole the needle will point to a spot south of you in Northern Canada.
The South Pole it would point away from you.

If you're on the North magnetic pole, the black end of the needle would try to point downwards. On the South magnetic pole it would try to point upwards.

you may harm THE EARTH! MWAhahahaha!!! Sorry, in simple terms kidding. The needle might in simple terms form of wobble around in random instructions. in case you held the compass on its factor, the needle might factor at as quickly as up and down (for the reason it fairly is the way the magnetic field lines run at that factor on earth).
