On the day he took office, the National Debt stood at this unfathomable number:
$5,727.776.738,304.64
In fiscal shorthand, that's $5.7 trillion dollars. Trillion with a "T."
Six and a half years later, the Bureau of Public Debt tells us the National Debt clocks in at a staggering:
$8,835,268,597,181.95
That's $8.8 trillion - an increase of $3.1 trillion dollars since January 20, 2001. And that amounts to a jump of 54% during Mr. Bush's watch.
Bush's Iraq policy is costing this country how much? per day? per month? ever since he pulled the trigger? Say... oh I donno, maybe over $1 billion PER DAY!!! Where in the hell do we get this kind of money? We get it the way we get all our stuff... on credit.
The neocons would want us to ignore the fact that we're funding this war with American Express, Visa and MasterCard by telling us we're either for the war on terror so it won't follow us home to kill us or we're traitors, collaborators and gut sucking liberals giving aid to the enemy. Hmmm, who do you want to be?
Senator Joe McCarthy's gonna hold hearings next week on this whole mess. Seems Visa's upping the interest rate cause Treasury's been late with a few payments.

It's more complicated than that. There is a strange sort of schizophrenia affecting the Republican Party since the days of Ronald Reagan. They truly believe down deep that taxes are too high, government is too big, and budgets should be balanced. BUT they are willing to make exceptions to support values they hold even more highly. Reagan pushed the US deficit to record levels, largely in order to build up the US military. The first President Bush did the same to fund the first Gulf War. And the current president has made yet another exception for his wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the "war on terror." In their minds, this kind of spending is an investment in making the world safe for American business. It doesn't hurt that the vast majority of the money goes to large American contractors who the Republicans see as "our kind of people."
When you parse the rhetoric and actions of the Republicans, the policies that really emerge are these:
Taxes on the wealthy are bad, taxes on everyone else are fine.
Welfare for the wealthy is good, welfare for anyone else is bad.
Military spending is always justifiable, domestic spending is bad, unless it supports rich white men.
Most social programs are a waste of money because they only support poor brown people who are not real Americans anyway.
America is great because of the actions of rich white men. To keep America great we need to keep shifting as many resources as possible to rich white men.
God bless America.

Anybody that thinks this country is doing well financially is either in deep denial or delusional. If you think it is doing so well, drive down south and check out the job situations in the Appalachian area. I am astounded at the level of deception these people are believing. Amazing. I bet they take 2 + 2 and come up with 2000. And Barney for your info, I am a CPA and I don't need your economics class.

Well, Bush Sr. got us into a great deal of debt, which Clinton had to pull us out of. Now Bush Jr. has us mired in debt so badly that our dollar is worth less than the Canadian dollar. And republicans think this is OK because thier taxes aren't getting higher. Yes, you pay fewer taxes but your money is worthless.
Basically, what will happen is a Dem will get elected, and *have* to raise taxes to repair this debt, and then the reps can make him/her look like a bad guy for raising taxes. Republicans would rather be in debt to China then have a functional economy.
I remember when republicans were good with money.. but then again I also remember when they were good on national security. The real reps need to take their party back.

Well Clinton did the same thing. If he is doing it on purpose, that is disgraceful. He should not be charged for treason. He is running a couple wars and those cost money. Maybe he should cut some welfare from people who are abusing them (using for more than a year at a time) to make up the deficit.

Baby Bush is just following the lead of Daddy Bush; he's done the same thing in terms of going into debt that George the First did, and we all get to clean it up after he's gone. Fun, fun, huh?

Debt these days is a commodity which can be sold to the highest bidder.
Bushco is all about selling America out, pocketing the profit along with his family and friends and leaving the average person behind to pick up the pieces.

Every damned one of you are either complete idiots, or you don't have a functioning pool of gray matter. Get an economics degree and then get back to me. I'll bet my annual salary against all of you that your own finances are to some degree putting you in debt. In short, you don't have anything to talk about.
With the exception of 'just me' above.
