The word "contraception" literally means "against conception" since they are used to prevent the conception of a baby.
However, some contraceptives, like the birth control pill, don't just work by preventing conception. They can also cause early abortions.
How is this possible? Primarily, the pill works by supressing ovulation, but that doesn't always work. Many women have "breakthrough ovulation" even while on the Pill. That means that a number of women do conceive while on the Pill.
Some of the women who conceive while on the Pill experience an early abortion - without their even knowing it. Hormones in the pill cause the lining of the uterus to deteriorate, making it unhospitable for the newly fertilized egg to implant, therefore causing an early termination of the pregnancy.
When this happens, women assume the blood they see is just a period, when in fact it could be the remains of the pregnancy.
And it's not just the Pill that works this way. Other hormonal contraceptives like the Nuva Ring, Depo and Patch also use similar methods.
You can read exactly about how hormonal birth control works by reading the "small print" in the package insert.

contra generally means "anti" or "opposite of"
Conception is when you become pregnant.
Therefore contraception is the opposite of getting pregnant-- IE, not getting pregnant.
