I've heard it described as passing an eight pound kidney stone. I'm hoping to find out in 5-10 years.

The early signs of labor are somewhat different for different women and that is why you hear so many different things.
Usually labor begins with a back ache. But most pregnant women have back aches every day so they do not suspect 'labor' at first. Then the tummy starts to contract and you may feel like you need to do #2, but can't. Eventually these tummy pains (which are not very bad) will start to come and go at more or less regular intervals. This is when most mothers-to-be realize that this may be 'it'. You spend the next few hours (usually) timing the pains until they either stop or become very regular, perhaps 10 minutes apart. At some point in here your water may break or it may not. If it does you no longer have to worry about whether this is the real thing....IT IS - GO TO THE HOSPITAL. But even if your water doesn't break (mine did not until I was already at the hospital with both my babies), by the time your pains are 5 minutes apart and very regular you will know it is time to start things moving along and implement THE PLAN.
Good luck and God bless.

It depends for a lot of people-- some feel very light, gradual pain that takes hours to turn into real labor. Its like menstrual cramps for some.
For others, things progress pretty rapidly. I woke up with a contraction that felt like a very strong cramp and lasted around 30 seconds. Then it went away, and 7 minutes later, I got another one. WIthin 2 hours they were 4 minutes apart. I lasted 1 hour, 30 minutes at home before heading to the hospital.
As time passes they grow more intense. If you are okay using pain medications, you can get an epidural (but do read up on them so you are informed-- always make your own decisions). An epidural is a needle they place into your back and it's attached to a tube. It feeds a local anethetic into your spinal cord, and if done correctly, you'll be 100% numb from the waist down (Its hard to move your legs)....you can make it through the whole labor nearly pain free.
I opted for the epi and had virtually no pain during labor.
Recovery isn't so bad either..I expected lots of pain but wasn't so bad... in fact I hardly used the pain meds at all, unless I wanted to sleep and thought it would help..... but I had too much adrenalin at that point!
Good luck sweetie!

If I were you I wouldnt ask people about their labor stories!! Lol I did the same thing when I would read books I would skip to the labor part, I was sooo scared. Mine was actually very very easy, and I was extremely suprised. Everyone is different though, Im sure you wont see the same labor story twice on here. I was induced on my 40th week. I was in labor for 14 hours (not really that bad) I did have an epidural which was the absolute best thing ever invented. I couldnt feel anything, i mean anything!! And the epidural didnt hurt AT ALL i couldnt even feel it when they were doing it. The only thing that really sucked was that you cant eat the entire time you are in labor. I had to be there at 5am and I didnt get to eat until about 2am the next day. They will give you ice chips but thats about it. I only felt one real contraction then I asked for the epidural :) I would get it as soon as you want cause real contractions hurt!! good luck and congratulations!!

For me it was like period cramps only ALOT worse. Kind of like a vice grip was around my belly and tightening every couple minutes! I was induced with Pitocin though which makes it worse. Even though it was bad, I'm 6 weeks pregnant with another one by choice. I'm hoping it won't be as bad, but I'll live through it because the outcome is the most wonderful gift you can have!

Have you ever had a charlie horse in your legs when you were growing up? Well take that, times 100 and put it on your stomach (no I am NOT over exaggerating)... it is the most intense, undescribable, can't quit put your finger on where exactly the pain is coming from, because all you know is that your WHOLE body over whelmed... I knew exactly where the pain was coming from, but if I didnt know I was in labor, I would have thought I was dieing! Delivery feels like someone has their hands inside of your "hoo haa" pulling in 2 seperate direction... like you are being torn apart from the bottom up... happy labor and delivery :) !

Please dont scare yourself. every experience is different. I read alot about the experience and no two are alike. . I learned that the hardest labor pains are not more than 12 times. You are young and it might be easier for you. I hope all goes well and you and your baby find blessings throughout your lives.

Well, at first it doesn't hurt so much. It is just contractions that have a little pain. Then they get closer and hurt more. I remember when they started out for me I was sweating a lot. I knew I was in labour because my water broke.
