my ex and i decided on a custody plan. i got all the paper work from his lawyer in the mail on Friday i dont completely understand it all and according to his lawyer i cant ask him becuase he represents my ex. i talked to my tax lady cause the papers say i can claim her as a dependent this year and he can claim head of household, but he has to have her a certain amount of days to do that, she was born in July and resides with me in October we started the 50/50 custody, my question is if i called like legal aid or some place that offers free lawyers would they sit down and explain everything to me i'm not looking for someone to represent me, just look things over cause i dont think its very fair he could claim head of household when she was with me most the year until half the time this month. i'm just confused. he already got off easy and only has to pay 55 dollars a month in child support...help!

Yes, you should consult with counsel prior to signing any custody forms if you don't understand them or have questions. Once you sign, you are stuck with what ever is written.
If you can't get a free legal clinic to assist you, pay the fee and see a private attorney. It will cost money, but what will it cost if you loose custody or support your child needs?

1. Why in the heck only $55/month?
2. If you claim her, and he claims head of household, one of you is guilty of tax fraud. Two people cannot claim the same child.
3. Do not agree to claim that he had her more than 50% of the time.
4. Your tax lady should be able to shed more light on the tax situation.
5. It does not sound like your ex AND you decided on a custody plan. It sounds like he convinced you to agree to a custody plan.
6. If he has an attorney and you do not, you are feeding yourself to the wolves. "A man who represents himself has a fool for a client." You are that man (woman)

GET AN ATTORNEY! You think you cannot afford to...you cannot afford not to.

Legal aid may or may not be able to help -- it depends on what their scope of services in your area are -- some offices are larger and offer more services than others.

You can hire an attorney -- or find one through a referral service, such as your state or county bar association -- to explain the terms of the agreement to you -- the attorney can do just that, without having to represent you in any other capacity.

This is what you do......
You call around and find a law office that is willing to give you an appointment for a free consultation ( most law offices will give you a free consult. if you make it sound like you got money) once you have your appointment, go in, get the legal advise you need, make sure you make it look like your going to spend money there with them if they sound like a good representation: Then leave by saying " thank you i need to go over my expences and i'll be calling back for representation once i find out what im going to do and thank you for your time"! Now you got what you needed and do what they told you for advise! Any lawyer wont tell you they do free consults, but if you make it sound like your going to drop a lot of money on your case, they'll be willing to then-- MONEY TALKS-- trust me, im going through something simular!!!!
