It is hard to track the domestication of dogs as it happened well before anyone was keeping records. Therefore some conjecture is needed.
It's very likely that a close relationship existed before dogs were domesticated as humans would scavenge from wolf kills and wolves would also take scraps from human kills. Today traditional hunter gatherers use dogs in a way that may not be very different to the ancestors of our dogs. The dogs track prey, the humans follow and dispatch the prey if the dogs haven't already done so. The humans benefit from the hunting skills of the dog. The dog benefits from being able to tackle prey larger than it would ordinarily be able to.

This is a matter of speculation, since it happened in prehistoric times. However, I assume that dogs (or domesticated wolves) served many of the same purposes as they do now. They will protect their companions, including humans and other animals the humans keep. They are good company. They are loyal, as long as you maintain your position as leader. They will let you know if somebody (or something) is coming. They can help find game for food. They are warm on a cold night.

Way back when certain wolves found it was easier to hang around the camps of our hominid ancestors rather than hunt for a living. Og and his caveman friends found that these animals could be useful such as tracking game and pulling packs. That's what started it all. It's hard to believe but a Yorkshire terrier and a bulldog can all trace their ancestry back to those wolves.

Because humans needed them for hunting and protection in the first place. Now they are needed as companions and to love. Unfortunately man also uses dogs to show how dominant man is.

There is some evidence to suggest it was the other way round and the dogs took the inititive by joining early humans voluntarily.

Some cultures ate them. I believe they stopped when dogs became more efficient workers, then food.
