I am a hillbilly. :)
Its an endearing term referring to people who dwell in remote, rural, and/or mountainous areas in the Southern USA.
While terms like redneck, hick, and cracker often connote rejection of, or resistance to, assimilation into the dominant culture, theoretically hillbillies are merely isolated from the dominant culture.

Wikipedia definition, as usual is incorrect. In the area where I live the word Hillbilly has a negative connotation.
Redneck is the accepted standard here-pick up trucks, several non running vehicles in the yard, mobile home living, etc.
Here a Hillbilly is an unsavory character who will come into a business with all the family members in tow, and they shoplift quite a few items. The guys dress in overalls and the people in general are poorer, not law abiding citizens. In the whole 26 years of living here, I have only ever seen 1 family fitting that description.
We have a lot of poor rural dwelling people here that I would be glad to consider a neighbor.
Not a good idea to judge people by what they drive, where they live or how they dress.

A person from the backwoods or a remote mountain area, is the dictionary definition. When I think of a hillbilly I think of the people in Hazard, Kentucky. I live in Kentucky, but they are cut off from the rest of the state, are extremely simple and kind people, and don't really get touched by the evil of the outside world.

Hillbilly is a term, often considered pejorative but sometimes endearing, referring to people who dwell in remote, rural, mountainous areas. Usage of the term "hillbilly" generally differs from other terms referring to rural people in the United States in that it can be used for mountain dwelling people anywhere but is generally not used to refer to rural people in non-mountainous areas. While terms like redneck, hick, and cracker often connote rejection of, or resistance to, assimilation into the dominant culture, theoretically hillbillies are merely isolated from the dominant culture. Because of its strongly stereotypical connotations, the term is frequently considered derogatory depending on the context in which it is used or the attitude of the user.
Cheers and have a nice week ahead :)

Hi, Moon! A "hillbilly" is (and I'm quoting Webster here...)
"A person from a backwoods or other remote area, especially from the mountains of the southern United States."
Webster also says it is often "disparaging". Maybe, but that's not the way I think of it.
Have a good one, kiddo. }:>

It's a term people use to describe back-mountain folk, people that have not really adapted to modern living. It was used first as a term of definition then it became just a way to a derogatory type thing.
