I mean Im 32 and I find myself not liking Rap Videos anymore, nor Rap to much.. Im like my parents who occassionally find a good rap song that they like and the rest Stinks to high heaven.. and Im Complaning about the R&B thats coming out cause its to young.. I cant pop lock for blocks to a bus stop to get your number.. what tha! Anyway im loving my Oldies and saying this was music.. old Jodeci, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badue, Jill Scoot, Dwele, Joe, Silk, R-Kelly (early R-Kelly)
And Rap it was B.I.G. , Tupac, L.L. Cool Jay, The Fat Boys, Jay Z ( Hard Knock Life vol.2) and De-la- soul, I was just trippin of of that..

When I was younger I think I always had a decent sense of musical taste. (Although I did have my Ice-T, NWA, E-40 & the Click phase.) But for the most part I think my taste was always mature. When I was growing up I lived in an area that only carried MTV - no BET or anything. We didn't even have R&B or soul radio stations. *poor me*
So I basically grew up listening to my parents music. Teddy, O'Jays, LTD (Jeffrey Osborne), Gap Band, Parliment, etc.. As I began to identifty with my generations music - I naturally gravitated towards early Tupac, Common Sense, KRS-One (BDP) and Public Enemy.
And I'm proud to say - my taste in music has rubbed off on my 13 year old daughter. When I plug in my MP3 player, she loves guessing who's singing the songs. How many 13 y.o. know Chaka Khan & Rufus, Anita Baker or Chuck Mangione - and I love the fact that she knows the words to songs like: 'holding on' by LTD & 'I honor you' by Canibus.
And she swears up & down she is the biggest: Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Musiq Soulchild, Common, Talib Kweli fan to ever live!!
She has done all of this while remaining in touch to with her generations musical taste. Because she has driven me crazy with 'crank that' - she will 'crank that' to whatever version she hears playing :D

I agree with you 100% Im 33 with a 13 yr old son. I feel sorry for him because he may never know what true hip hop really means. I dont like any of the stuff the mainstream promotes.
In the 80's I thought I would love hip hop for the rest of my life. Nothing could ever take that away. Now most of my fav artist are dead or have grandkids.
This new stuff is just trash. I dont know why they cant see it just drags our communtiy down. Gives us less credit as having a valuable contribution to society.

Gawd. I thought I was alone. I MISS all the ones you mentioned. Some of the new stuff...The ONLY thing it's got going for it is a hot beat...But it doesn't MEAN anything hardly anymore!
I LOVE 103.9 WDKX in Rochester, because they play a lot of the good stuff. I think cuz the DJs are our age and older.
(I'll be 30 on December 8th)
I remember when rap really was poetry set to rhythm.
And R&B was more than just f*cking and break-ups.

I used to be into the club scene big time when I was in college. Now that I'm 26 I realy can't stand to listen to that music for too long. There's a couple of songs that I still like, but I don't listen to it the way I used to. I would listen to it when I was on the way to work in the morning and while I was at work. I had a summer job that was in an office when I was in college.

does 24 count?..lol..well, im gonna answer this anyway...
Am I changing? a little bit, i mean i listen to the hip-hop and stuff that's out now cuz it's all around me..but i don't like alot of them..like all the down south stuff, i mean they're catchy, but i don't consider it good/real music. I'm a huge fan of JAYZ..I think his music is GREAT! that's the only rapper i TRULY like..others are so-so..R&B is okay..obviously I love me some Beyonce, Alicia, India Arie, I mean anything good that's actually saying something that i've felt..ya know..
Now the Clothes are what kills me the most..OMG..I don't know what the eff they are wearing now..this kids are walking around looking like cartoon characters..neon green this, neon orange that...sweat shirts with a million colors on them.. sneakers with a thousands different designs on it..it's ridiculous..

R.Kelly and Mr. Biggs
SWV
Total...any thing real R&B and nineties. Never was a totally big fan of Rap, but all the names of the R&B artist you listed makes me wonder why can't we go back to having music that had meaning and soul and made lovers feel good? (Not mean to sound explicit).
Deborah Cox
Brian McKnight

I'm 26. It's because we are getting older and this music today sucks. Seriously. (well the majority of it, anyway). I find myself listening to a lot of soft rock stations. Funny, right?

Yes, I'm the one now complaining about the loud music. Before, it was me listening to that crap all the way up with 15 inch woofers.
