Generally Windows XP has the generic drivers that will let your printer install via Plug and Play and run the basic printer funtions.

As mentioned you go to the web-site of the printer manufacture and find "Support" there usually many drivers listed, choose the one for your printer and OS (Windows 98, Vista whatever) put it in a folder and read the instructions on the web-site. Some may be double click to install. My old Panasonic I put the driver in a folder, plug up he printer, turn on and a box open tell me what to do. I usually have to show/find the folder with the driver and it install.
