on audio or installation CD's? It has been like this for a few weeks. I didn't want to try and fix it because i don't want to mess up anything. CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO?

Try to have your media player open and doing nothing (idle) on my library or something and the insert the music cd.It might work.This happens if you have loads of different media players in your machine.Some of them become the default device during instalation.

Check the drivers for the Cd/DVD Rom device. Update as needed.
In addition, make sure your program is set to be the default for that type (CD Audio). Lastly, check the CD in another machine to be sure that it is working properly. (not just a CD Player, but in another computer with a similar CD Rom drive.) It is very possible that your cD Rom drive is going out.
