Seems like your Hard Drive is probably full... would be a good idea to buy an external, but it would be advisable to find the root of the problem before buying additional things......
How old is your computer ?
Do you know any specs such as the processor speed, the hard drive size, the RAM size ?
They are some things that could cause your pc to be slow....
Also, most importantly, when your PC crashes, are there any error messeges or regular occurances ? If so, write them down, and search google. Or email them to me and I'll search for you if you haven't long on the web.
I'll tell you how to find the specs of your PC if you email me =D
Another cause:
Spyware, adware, or viruses, check for all of them!
A very good free program is "Limewire" Get the 15day free trial, do all the scans =]
Like some have said, do a disk de-fragmentation.
Go to: Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
(You can also find "Disc Cleanup" there)

I'm guessing it is more of a space issue (hard drive) than it is an overheating issue. Most people either forget or don't know that your computer uses some of your hard drive space for its virtual memory. Much like the memory you have installed, but this memory is used to cache programs that are in use. If for example you are running a CD burning application trying to save your wav files to a CD, that program will not only store information into the virtual memory (hard drive) but also uses even more space to run its buffer for the burning. It will be a painful process, but once you start getting your wav files off of your system, you should start seeing a performance increase. Although, I would suggest two other things:
Get a registry cleaner program
save mp3 files vice wav . . . they are smaller
Even if you download them as wav, convert them into mp3 format and you will find you can store many more songs.

PC doesn't overheat due to a full hard drive. If your PC is overheating, you may need to replace your power supply. Even if you add an additional fan, if the power supply isn't functioning properly, the extra fan will do no good.
You might also consider a memory upgrade. I won't run a PC unless it has at least 1GB of RAM.
To determine if you have a hardware failure, when you boot there should be a key that you can hit to get you into diagnostics. It depends on the manufacturer, but it is usually F2 or F12. Just watch the upper right corner of your PC when it boots.
I would run a full diagnostics scan to see if you have a hard drive, power supply or other type of failure.

How long does it take before the computer crashes? 10 mins, an Hour? What are you doing when it crashes. Have you just booted into safe mode and see if it ever crashes there? (that would most likely take software problem).
How much free space do you have on your hard drive?

if you have USB ports then a easy solution is to buy a hard drive and a usb hard drive enclosure and a usb cable connect the two machines together and down load most if not all of your Wave files to the new hard drive. this way you have fast easy access to the files and your computer is ready for more. as for the heating reopen the box and with a vacuum cleaner vacuum all the dust out.if it still is over heating then a component may be failing and its time for a new machine(not worth the time and effort to find the fault.)

Crashing could be due to anything, software conflicts, security updates required, overheating, Viruses, etc. If all the advise above has failed the best thing is to do is backup all your stuff (i.e external hardrive) and re-install windows. Install all latest service packs and security updates apart from anything internet related (i.e IE7).

Computers don't crash because the hard disk is getting full.
You have another problem. Try a fresh install of your operating system

As well as buying a new fan, try cleaning the CPU of any old thermal grease and reaply. Old grease can often dry out, causing the CPU to overheat.
