What are the dangers of using a regular appliance paint inside?
The unit works great otherwise and I would hate to throw it out if it can still serve its purpose with no danger to us.

Don't even think about this!!!! the original powder coat finish inside your microwave was developed to withstand the heat and energy inside your microwave!!! Anything else will actually be affected by the microwaves!! Totally dangerous!!

Buy a new one, they are not THAT expensive, anymore!! DO NOT apply any kind of paint inside that unit! Deadly fumes, electrical fire, electrical short, piosonous residues in your food....the list is awesome why this is far too dangerous to attempt!! Don't do it!!!!

I don't think you want to do this without consulting the manufacturer. I can see the paint reacting to the microwave energy, possibly catching fire. Also it might interfere with the reflective properties of the microwave surfaces.

Maybe it isn't too important for the inside to look pretty.

On the external it does no longer topic. Spray paint goes to be softer than the baked on tooth that's at the refrigerator and wave at gift. A waste of time. Use MacTac vinyl

Do not paint this unit, if it was meant to be painted, it would be.
