Poem:

"The spirits of the air live in the smells
Of fruit; and Joy, with pinions light, roves round
The gardens, or sits singing in the trees."
Thus sang the jolly Autumn as he sat,
Then rose, girded himself, and o'er the bleak
Hills fled from our sight; but left his golden load.
William Blake

This lyric was written by Johnny Mercer for music by Woody Herman. When the words are separated from the music, something is lost but they still convey a New England autumn pretty well.

" When an early autumn walks the land and chills the breeze
and touches with her hand the summer trees,
perhaps you'll understand what memories I own.

There's a dance pavilion in the rain all shuttered down,
a winding country lane all russet brown,
a frosty window pane shows me a town, grown lonely.

That spring of ours that started so April-hearted,
seemed right for just a boy and girl.
I never knew, did you, any spring would come in view
so early, early, early, early.

Darling if you care, please, let me know,
I'll meet you anywhere, I miss you so.
Let's never have to share another early autumn."
