In general, it depends on what that something is. If it's junk food and clogs your arteries you'd want to think ahead if a trip to the ER and a replacement would cost you less grief, downtime and money and how it will affect your career.

If it's something else you might want to cautiously and totally review the pros and cons before making a decision. If you remain in limbo and there is no closure then the something never gets solved. Many people remember the memories but realize that people change. Have you been to a 10-year high school class reunion, or a 20 or 30 year class reunion, and over the years watched and listened to how people have changed? Well it's a fact that people don't stay the same. Just as bald heads, pot bellies, ups and downs, children age you, people suffer grief, etc. well, just realize that things change, situations change, and even if two people are together and change together they can split, just as two people change without each other they split. You need common ground and common plans. It's funny how some people (and different countries) rely on numerology to see peoples birthpaths and see if they are both going in the same direction. Try it for fun.

If you cant own it - that is, it is another person then you have no choice. Controlling someone will never work in the long term. If it is meant to be, it will come back. If it isnt a person, then maybe you should never give up - maybe you just need to try damn harder to keep it. If you really want something bad enough, then you need to work hard at it.

Well, there is the good old "replacement therapy" stand-by. Find something else to fill the gap left by the thing your giving up. Or, lots of somethings. Movies, group/friend outtings, new hobby, volunteering for some worthy cause....

But really, take a big deep breath and just stop doing it/holding it/coveting it - etc. We will all be celebrating your courage to do it!
