I don't know...but I hate it when people pronounce my name MEE-shell....I always correct them and say MISH-shell.
And my dad's name is Mitchell...so we have to be careful as to how to pronounce our names. : )

my sisters name is Michelle and we don't pronounce it mee-shell or mitchel... it's just Michelle!

The French pronounce i as e, and ch as sh, instead of tch.
