There seemed to be lots of sub stories in the book, ones about the politics and faults and failings of the scientific community, the other about the relationship between a scientist and the 'creator'.

On the first storey, was Carl saying things in fiction that he could never come out and say in real life.

On the second, was the book autobiographical.

I think it was just a story.... In the first, he was alluding to the fact that the people would never really hear what happened with the first alien contact; the second, I think it was just his stab at a love story.

It is just a story. Don't over analyze it. It was just his idea of what first contact with an alien intelligence might be like.
