I am writing an essay in my English class, and my topic is "What does the terms, 'Liberal' and 'Conservative' mean to you"? They are supposed to be my views, but I need some ideas in detail. A little help?

If this is for your English class then remember this:

"What DO the WORDS "Liberal" and "Conservatiive" mean to you?"

Now, for my answer. Unfortunately, I have seen too many responses for either political (or military) questions here on Y!A that have one or the other word in them. My point is this - it is sad when complex political issues get reduced to blaming "Libs" or "Neo-Cons" for all the problems in the nation. A democratic country and a democratic government deserve a lot more understanding than merely painting both sides of an issue a different color.

Liberal-A philosophy that government has specific functions, that being the defense of the country, the maintainance of the infrastructure, stewardship of the environment the education of the people and the welfare of the less fortunate. They also feel healthcare should be a function of the government leaving nobody out of the loop.
Conservative-Government's main purpose is the defense of the country, education and infrastructure. Anything that can be privatized is good. Lower taxes, taking responsibility for yourself and expecting others to do the same.

IMO a liberal is a person who believes that people should be able to do what they want as long as they are not hurting others, such as having an abortion or being gay. They are more open-minded. A conservative(usually religious people) believe the opposite and are more closed-minded.
