Earth surface cracks due to stress applied to the rocks. This is usually due to the motions of plates due to plate tectonics. The effects of this "cracking" are rifting, ridge building in the ocean and earthquakes.

exactly in the similar fashion our skins cracks when exposed heat and no sun lotion applied to prevent it.
