Gagne for the first time since breakin into the bigs with the dodgers is not closing out games and has struggled to adjust to the setup role and not having to shut down teams for the win. With Paplebon and Okajima he's been relieved of the pressure which I think he needs. If the Sox had signed Gagne at the beginning of the season instead of Texas and the Sox used Paplebon as a starter as orginally planned I think he'd have been alot more succesful.

It could be his changing roles from closer to set-up man. People may say it is still pitching an inning and the hitters are the same but the mentality is totally different. Now he may have to be ready to come in the game as early as the seventh inning. For someone who has become so used to pitching the 9th inning, that can be a big ajustment. Also, he has never really pitched in such a big, important atmosphere before. While he was closing in LA, they really weren't competing for a championship. Boston is a city with a lot more pressure and they are a team that expects to win. He is probably feeling that pressure more than ever right now. When this happens, everytime you go out on the mound and a runner gets on base you get the "Oh not again" thoughts in your head. It becomes a snowball effect. His stuff definitely is not where it was before his injuries. He still has good stuff but nowhere close to what it was.

Gagne has lacked consistency since coming back from his various surgeries. The Rangers found him and this problem to be expendable when they discovered they had closer material in Akonori Otsuka.

He is still thinking of himself as a closer. Notice his last time out against the Angels when he came in the 9th he pitched great. But the other night when he came in the 8th he stunk!

I would think the Sox will try and dump him in the off season or next year

Well, Gagme, as I like to call him, to me is ****! My husband and a couple of guys of my softball team think it is all in his head. For example, the other night against Cleveland, he was throwing his fast ball and then was hit off it and he stopped throwing it. He is letting his mind mess up his game. I personally, really don't care what it is, I just don't want him coming out of that bullpen again!

All these teams believed he would return to his pre injury form and that has not happened. His sinker no longer sinks and he has lost 5mph on his fastball.

Because he is on the Red Sox now. It is customary to do so. We mustn't judge, its just their way.
