Hell has nothing to do with that.

Perhaps this is why we have two ears. The difference in time one ears detects sound before the other suggest where it came from. After all the speed of propagation of sound is the same in the same medium...

time of travel =Distance /Velocity of sound

in a word: triangulation

When the sound arrives in one ear a tiny fraction of a second before it arrives in the other ear we know that the sound is closer to the ear that heard it first and the difference in time gives our brain a good idea of the angle. A sound that arrives at exactly the same time in both ears is coming from somewhere directly in front of or behind us. (more precisely, it's on the plane that is 90 degrees to the line on which both ears are)

In addition to that, since our ears are shapped differently from front to back, the minor variations created by the shape of the ear help our brain differentiate between sounds that are in front of us and sounds that are behind us.

the brain sorts out the information from each ear detecting strength of the wave or how loud the sound is.
